The Boston Bruins announced today that the National Hockey League organization had hired assistant coach John Gruden to serve under recently hired Head Coach Jim Montgomery. Gruden, a former Bruins defenseman and an eight-round draft pick in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft, appeared in 59 games for Boston and 118 for the B’s top minor-pro affiliate, the Providence Bruins.
The 52-year-old Gruden is a Minnesota native and a graduate of Ferris State University, where he played four seasons with the Bulldogs. John appeared in 92 career NHL games and spent time in the league with teams such as the Ottawa Senators and Washington Capitals. Most of his playing years were spent grinding it out in the minor leagues and a short stint overseas in Germany before retiring from the game
John was recently fired as head coach of the New York Islanders, where he spent the last four seasons. He also spent time as the bench boss for the Flint Firebirds and Hamilton Bulldogs of the Ontario Hockey League.
