It’s called the “8-Spoked Salute,” and if you’ve ever been at TD Garden when fans cheer it on and stand for it, then you know how special and momentous it can be. Just ask Elizabeth Burnham.

“It’s an honor,” she shared with the Medfield Post after receiving the prestigious recognition last October. “My kids would be so proud.”

That’s because outside of her active-duty Captain Promotable rank in the US Army Reserves, she’s also a 5th-grade teacher — a job where it’s very hard to be reserved. Especially when students, friends, family and 19,000+ fans see you on the jumbotron!

“I couldn’t stop waving,” she recalled. “It was a real special experience.”

An experience where sport and sacrifice intertwine to form a bond that is honored by all — no matter your politics, passions or pursuits. And, in the case of the Boston Bruins, that intertwining involves 8 spokes, bringing even more value, sentiment and meaning to the beloved and be-spoked B’s!

According to an official announcement between the team and its community partner, The Mass Lottery, the official 8-Spoked Salute is described as follows:

“The Bruins and the Massachusetts State Lottery are proud to salute the men and women of the United States Armed Forces. After each home game of the 2021/22 season, a member of the Armed Forces [Active Duty, Guard or Reserve] will receive the 8-Spoked Salute for their service to our country. Selected winners will receive a shout-out on the Bruins official Twitter & Facebook channels and 4 Loge tickets to Bruin’s game.

If you would like to nominate a Service Member of the Community, fill out the form below. Entries for selection must include a valid reason as to why an individual should be selected for this honor and a high-resolution image of the nominee to be shared on the Bruins social media channels.

By filling out the entry form, you acknowledge that you have read and agreed to the Official Rules. Last year, the Lottery gave back over $986 million to the Commonwealth, providing essential local aid for all 351 cities and towns in Massachusetts.”

With nominations now open for the 2022-2023 “8-Spoked Salute,” the B’s hope to recognize even more amazing service members like Burnham, along with military veterans, first responders and healthcare hereos who give back not only to their country, but also their local community.

Here’s a list of the following “salute worthy” games the B’s have lined up for the upcoming ’22-’23 season to mark on your Bruins’ calendar:

  • Saturday, October 15th – 8-Spoked Salute Opening Night (and then after every Bruins home game)
  • Thursday, November 17th – Military Appreciation Night
  • Thursday, March 2nd – First Responders Night
  • Tuesday, March 28th – Healthcare Heroes Night
