It was the battle between the pipes tonight at the Canadian Tire Centre as the game was ultimately decided in a shootout where Boston would lose 3-2. Jeremy Swayman made 31 saves while the Senator’s Cam Talbot made 49 saves. Brad Marchand played his 900th NHL career game tonight against Ottawa.

Game Notes

After a scoreless first period, the Boston Bruins looked to open up the scoreboard when Patrice Bergeron wristed one in passed Talbot, however, the goal was overturned after a successful coach’s challenge for being offside.

Boston continues to have issues with taking unnecessary penalties as Trent Frederic skated off on a hand-on puck penalty. Unfortunately, the Senator’s Tim Stützle took advantage of his team’s power play and made it 1-0 at 8:11 in the second period.

Boston’s Jake DeBrusk quickly responded with a goal of his own, tying the game 1-1 after scoring off his own rebound. Patrice Bergeron and Charlie McAvoy were credited with the helpers on DeBrusk’s goal.

Ottawa’s Alex DeBrincat made it 2-1 at 13:37 in the second after scoring on a bouncing puck, beating Swayman’s glove side. Gameplay continued to intensify well into the start of the final period n regulation.

After a dominant showing throughout the third period, the Bruins would get a late power play opportunity when Travis Hamonic was called for a hooking penalty against Taylor Hall. Despite a barrage of aggressive shots from multiple players, Talbot managed to make acrobatic saves in the net.

However, within moments after the power play ended, Boston’s Pavel Zacha tied the game after scoring his 200th NHL career point. Both Hampus Lindholm and Charlie Coyle were assessed with the assists on the goal. Gameplay continued to be intense on both ends of the ice and closed out in regulation with a 2-2 score before heading into overtime.

There were many close scoring chances for both teams during the five-minute overtime however neither side was able to tally the winning goal. The game would be decided in a shootout. Boston would outscore Ottawa 27-5 in the third period.

Boston’s Jake DeBrusk has four points in the last two games including his 14th goal tonight against Ottawa. The B’s are now 27-4-3 while the Senators are 15-16-3. Boston continues to lead the Atlantic Division and the entire league.
