The Boston Bruins fall to the St. Louis Blues 3-2 in overtime. With the Bruins leading into the third period, the club could not hold off the Blues. Boston takes a point away from this contest, but fans still worry about the team’s early-season struggles.

The Blues scored at 6:25 of the first period after a goal from Radek Faksa, jumping out to an early lead. The Bruins quickly answered after St. Louis native, Trent Frederic, found the back of the net at 9:34 of the first period. Georgii Merkulov assisted on Frederic’s goal alongside Charlie McAvoy; this was Merkulov’s first NHL point after being called up from the Providence Bruins this past week. Frederic lit the lamp again when he scored his second goal at 12:12 of the first period. Before this game, Frederic had one goal in 18 games. He scored two goals after 2:04 minutes of ice time today.

An obvious struggle for the Bruins is their lack of shots on the net. Despite leading the Blues 2-1 after the first period, the team registered only six shots on goal versus St. Louis’ 11. The black and gold ended the game with only 17 shots on goal, nowhere near enough to win. The Bruins are playing too much around the perimeter and passing more than they are shooting.

The referees called off a Blue’s goal in the second period after Mathieu Joseph clipped Joonas Korpisalo’s skate. This call was deemed goaltender interference. Nathan Walker got the equalizer for the Blues to tie it up 2-2 at 9:18 of the third period.

This game was sent into overtime, and the Bruins looked to be on their heels for the whole extra period. Fans have seen this trend from the club since the conclusion of the first period. Brayden Schenn ripped one past Korpisalo for the overtime winner, lifting the Blues past the Bruins 3-2.

Joonas Korpisalo completed his fifth season start saving 28 shots this afternoon. He is a huge reason why the Bruins were able to hold on during this game and come out with a point.

This is a funk that the Bruins cannot seem to get out of; a direction that Bruins fans are not used to seeing and are not pleased with. Charlie Coyle post-game said, “everyone knows how to play hockey, and everyone’s been here enough to know. … we get out of these funks together.”

Bruins center Mark Kastelic went down the tunnel in the third period with a lower-body injury and did not return to the game. Coach Jim Montgomery deemed Kastelic to be day-to-day with this injury; nonetheless, a hit to the Bruins’ fourth line and overall offense. Kastelic played on the fourth line alongside Riley Tufte and Cole Koepke.

The Bruins will kick off a two-game home stand Monday night when the Columbus Blue Jackets come to town. This is the first meeting for these two teams this season.
