The Boston Bruins announced this morning that they have recalled forward Jeffrey Viel from their American Hockey League affiliate, the Providence Bruins. A native of Rimouski, Quebec, Viel has appeared in fourteen games for the P-Bruins, registering four points and 39 penalty minutes.
The move comes after forward Mark Kastelic suffered a lower-body injury during Saturday’s 3-2 overtime loss to the St. Louis Blues. Boston Bruins Head Coach Jim Montgomery told reporters yesterday that Kastelic’s status is “day-to-day“. As a result, Kastelic will be unavailable for tonight’s contest against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The B’s also reassigned forward Riley Tufte to Providence.
Viel can play both left and right wing, and has played in 49 National Hockey League games to date, all with the San Jose Sharks. The 27-year-old signed with the B’s as a free agent, having spent the entire 2023-24 season with the Manitoba Moose in the AHL.
Standing at 6’2″, 205-pounds, Viel has shown a willingness to drop the gloves throughout his career. Bruins fans might remember his scrap with Los Angeles Kings forward Andre Lee during the two teams preseason matchup in Quebec City. In 2022, as a member of the Sharks, he fought former Bruins’ captain Zdeno Chara. For a Bruins team that is searching for energy, Viel is likely to bring just that. In his limited time in the NHL, he has accumulated 139 penalty minutes. Perhaps he will add to that total tonight.
