For the first time this season, the defense won the weekend in college hockey. All three blueliners in the Bruins’ system made their way onto the scoresheet with significant contributions, including one who rarely gets involved offensively. They for sure earned the Three Stars of the weekend, but they weren’t the only ones hogging the headlines:
Ty Gallagher (D) – Colorado College – Gallagher continued his scoring run with assists in both games against Western Michigan over the weekend. He set up the Tigers opening goal on Friday night, then sprung the rush leading to the equalizer on Saturday. Gallagher has five points in his last five games and nine in ten overall, already nearly doubling his output from last season. He leads CC in scoring and is second amongst Bruins prospects behind Dans Locmelis.
Mason Langenbrunner (D) – Harvard – Coming into this weekend, Langenbrunner has only scored one goal in two seasons with the Crimson. Coming out of the weekend, he has tripled that total with a goal each Friday and Saturday night, and his second proved crucial in stealing a point from sixth-ranked Cornell in an eventual 2-2 tie. Fellow Bruin draftee Ryan Walsh would also factor in the night, netting a third-period power play equalizer to force overtime.
Elliott Groenewold (D) – Quinnipiac – Groenewold scored his second goal of the season on Friday night against Brown, breaking a 2-2 late in the third period to clinch the win for the Bobcats. The freshman blueliner has started to find his footing at the college level, recording all four of his points in his last five games after going pointless through his first five. He’s also fourth in time on ice for Quinnipiac, at just over 19 minutes per game.
Dans Locmelis (C) – UMass – Locmelis found his way back on the scoresheet after a three-game absence during the Munitemen’s 5-1 romp over tenth-ranked Providence. In the third period, Locmelis assisted on a power play goal and scored his own to put the game away. Locmelis has not recorded a point since November 2nd against American International College before Saturday night. The sophomore from Latvia now has 11 points in 12 games, leading all Bruins NCAA prospects in scoring.
Andre Gasseau (LW) – Boston College – Gasseau built off his big weekend against Maine by extending his scoring streak with a goal against UConn on Friday night. He stuffed home a Ryan Leonard rebound in tight on goal as BC mounted a late comeback that ultimately fell short in an eventful 5-4 loss. Gasseau’s five goals lead all Bruins NCAA prospects, and he has seven points total in nine games this season.
Looking ahead: Gasseau, Dean Letourneau, and Oskar Jellvik will face Philip Svedeback and the Providence Friars on Tuesday night in a rare weeknight standalone game. BC has a quick turnaround for the weekend with a home-and-home with Northeastern. Groenewold, Chris Pelosi, and Quinnipiac have a Friday night trip to Ithaca to take on Ryan Walsh and Cornell and then Colgate on Saturday night before coming home. Cornell will welcome Princeton after facing the Bobcats.
Gallagher and CC host St Cloud State in Colorado Springs for the weekend in a ranked conference matchup. Casper Nassen and the skidding Miami Redhawks travel to Omaha for a two-game weekend set, presenting another opportunity to right the ship after dropping nine of their last ten. Jake Schmaltz and North Dakota also have a bounceback weekend ahead of them. They will host Robert Morris after Denver swept them at home.
Mason Langenbrunner and Dans Locmelis will lock horns on Friday night when UMass hosts Harvard. Locmelis and the Minutemen also host Vermont on Sunday afternoon. Beckett Hendrickson and Minnesota can create some separation in the Big Ten standings with a weekend series against Notre Dame in South Bend.
