After signing forward Tyler Johnson to a one-year, $775,000 contract yesterday, per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman the Boston Bruins have placed forward Max Jones on waivers. Jones has played in four games with the Bruins so far this season, where he had eight penalty minutes and did not register a point.

Jones is in the first year of a two-year, $2,000,000 contract having joined the Bruins this summer after spending the beginning of his career in the Anaheim Ducks organization. By either assigning Jones to their American Hockey League Affiliate Providence, or if Jones is claimed by another National Hockey League team, the Bruins will create $1,000,000 in cap space.

If Jones clears waivers, the opportunity to play for AHL Providence could be beneficial for both Jones and Boston. The Rochester, Michigan native missed most of training camp with an injury, and after dressing on opening night against the Florida Panthers, saw himself frequently healthy scratched.

While Jones has not played in the AHL since the 2019-20 season when he was a member of the San Diego Gulls, if he is assigned to Providence it could provide him with the opportunity to play everyday. This could be especially valuable to Jones given his difficult start to the season. After waiving Jones and signing Johnson, the Bruins’ roster is now at 13 forwards and seven defensemen. The Bruins will be back in action tonight against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
