After reports surfaced last night that Boston Bruins Defenseman Charlie McAvoy was admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital after suffering an upper-body injury in the 4 Nations Face-Off, the Bruins have announced that the Long Beach, New York native will miss Thursday’s Championship game. The news comes at a horrible time for both McAvoy and Team USA, ahead of a rematch with Team Canada at TD Garden.
What exactly is ailing McAvoy is unknown at this time, however Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff, released a tweet Tuesday morning, suggesting the Bruins Defenseman may be dealing with an infection. Regardless of what McAvoy is dealing with, this is an enormous loss for the United States, and potentially the Boston Bruins. Having already lost Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes to an injury before the tournament, the United States will have their defensive depth tested even more.
Whether or not McAvoy will miss any time for the Bruins remains to be seen. Boston returns to action Saturday night at TD Garden against the Anaheim Ducks, with the B’s currently sitting one point behind the Detroit Red Wings for the second Wild Card spot in the National Hockey League’s Eastern Conference standings. The Bruins are already facing an up-hill climb to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs this season, and they cannot afford to lose a superstar like McAvoy for a long period of time. How long Boston will be without McAvoy, if they are without him at all, could be the difference between making or missing the playoffs.
