The Providence Bruins announced that the top minor-pro affiliate of the Boston Bruins have re-signed forward Joey Abate to a two-year contract extension. The 6′-1″ 197-pound Bloomingdale, Illinois native has spent the last three seasons in the American Hockey League after leaving the NCAA ranks at the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

In 132 career American Hockey League games all with Providence, the 26-year-old 14-17-31 numbers and 265 penalty minutes. Abate is a buzzsaw out on the ice for the Bruins who has a high motor and strong forecheck and an eagerness to get under an opponents skin. Next season there will be a decent amount of grit on the Providence Bruins team with the re-signing of Abate and veteran forward Jeffery Viel who’s entering his last year of a two-year deal.


Last season Abate appeared in 44 regular season games in a year he was often injured posting 8-4-12 totals. In four Calder Cup Playoff games the former USHL Youngstown Phantom notched one assist.
