The American Hockey League’s Providence Bruins announced this morning that the top minor-pro affiliate of the National Hockey League’s Boston Bruins has signed defenseman Christian Wolanin to a one-year contract. The 30-year-old Quebec City, Quebec native joined the Providence team after signing a professional tryout agreement on November 20th and has been a great fit on the backend for this AHL Bruins team.

Wolanin has appeared in six games for the Providence Bruins before today’s contract signing and has contributed offensively with 1-6-7 numbers. The 6′-2″, 190-pound blueliner was selected in the fourth round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft and has made NHL stops in Los Angeles with the Kings, in Vancouver with the Canucks, and now on the East Coast of the United States in Providence, Rhode Island.

With the parent Boston Bruins and Providence affiliate recently dealing with injury troubles, it was crucial to add another member to the defensive corps to stop the bleeding. Since joining the Bruins, Wolanin has fit in nicely and has not only been a solid player on the blueline but also a seamless addition to the Bruins’ special teams, particularly on the man advantage, quarterbacking the team’s power play.

In 86 career NHL games, Wolanin has 6-17-23 numbers at the highest level of hockey in the world. In the AHL, on the other hand, Christian has contributed 25-159-184 numbers in 244 career contests. Wolanin has a championship pedigree, winning an NCAA National Championship with the University of North Dakota in 2015 and hoisting the AHL Calder Cup Trophy as a member of the Abbotsford Canucks, the top minor-pro affiliate of the NHL Vancouver Canucks.

Providence is back in action this afternoon when the Bruins return home after a five-game road trip to face the visiting Springfield Thunderbirds. Puck drop in this afternoon’s game at the Amica Mutual Pavilion is set for 3:05 pm. The AHL Bruins beat the Thunderbirds last night in the final game of the road trip, courtesy of a Christian Wolanin overtime goal, his first tally of the season.
