This weekend in Boston Bruins college hockey prospects belonged to one conference: the ECAC. Four players on ECAC teams combined for nine points, and two of their teams swept their opponents in what has quietly been a very deep and competitive conference this season:
Ryan Walsh (C) – Cornell – Walsh racked up four points over the Big Red’s weekend sweep over visiting Alaska, scoring three goals and assisting on another. Two of his goals came on the man-advantage, including the icebreaker on Saturday to open his three-point night in a 5-2 win. Cornell’s captain is up to 6-12-18 in 15 games this season, and is just two assists behind matching his career high.
Chris Pelosi (C) – Quinnipiac – Pelosi recorded a point in each game of the Bobcats’ weekend sweep over Union and RPI. He assisted on their first goal against the Dutchmen on Friday night and then scored the go-ahead goal with less than two minutes in regulation on Saturday, though the Engineers would shortly answer to force overtime. Pelosi stands just an assist behind his freshman year scoring production with 12-11-23, having matched his goalscoring total with that tally on Saturday night.
Elliott Groenewold (D) – Quinnipiac – Groenewold also contributed two points to the Bobcats high scoring weekend, recording a pair of assists in the 4-3 win over RPI on 23:20 of ice time. Like Pelosi, Groenewold has his freshman year totals in his sights, with 11 points through 22 games being a single contribution behind his previous best of 12. His second assist, which factored into Pelosi’s goal, set a new personal high with nine.
Looking Ahead: Jonathan Morello and Mason Langenbrunner get the next slate started early with a Monday night matchup at Harvard. Following their nonconference matchup, the Crimson will host St. Lawrence and Clarkson in their regular weekend schedule, while Boston University will start a home-and-home with UMass-Lowell in Agganis Arena on Friday.
Pelosi and Groenewold will travel to play Colgate on Friday, then face Walsh on Saturday night in a significant conference matchup. Cornell will play host to Princeton, who are tied with Quinnipiac atop the ECAC standings, on Friday before welcoming the Bobcats to Lynah Rink.
Fresh off their beatdown of Stonehill, James Hagens, Dean Letourneau, Will Moore, and Kristian Kostadinski open a home-and-home with red-hot Providence in Chestnut Hill on Friday. The Friars, despite losing goaltender Philip Svedeback to injury, handled Maine in a weekend sweep, only allowing a single goal. It is still unclear if Andre Gasseau and Oskar Jellvik will return to the Boston College lineup for the weekend.
Casper Nassen and Miami will host Omaha in a two-game weekend set, while Will Zellers and North Dakota will welcome Denver to Grand Forks. Beckett Hendrickson and Minnesota will host the number one team in the nation, as Michigan comes to Mariucci Arena.
