The Boston Bruins have re-signed defenseman Billy Sweezey to a one-year deal with an NHL cap hit of $885,000, the team announced today. Sweezey’s two-year contract that he inked with the Bruins in 2024 was set to expire at the conclusion of this season.

Sweezey, 30, has spent his two seasons in the Bruins organization with the Providence Bruins. This season, he appeared in 69 games and scored 1-16-17, setting career-highs in the latter two stats. His 84 penalty minutes were the third-highest on the team behind Joey Abate and recent addition Navrin Mutter. During the 2024-25 season, the Hanson, Mass., native appeared in 64 games for Providence and recorded 1-9-10 with 67 penalty minutes in his first season in the organization.

The 6’1”, 205-pound defenseman has been recalled by the Bruins previously on an emergency basis, most recently in January when the team’s backend was depleted due to injuries. However, he did not appear in a game, and over his two seasons in the Boston system, he has not played for the NHL club.

In his AHL career, the right-shot defenseman has appeared in 338 games over six seasons and has 7-50-57 with 434 career penalty minutes. Sweezey has appeared in nine career NHL games, all coming in the 2022-23 season for the Columbus Blue Jackets. In those games, he recorded one assist.

Sweezey and the Atlantic Division-winning Providence Bruins begin the AHL Calder Cup Playoffs in the coming days as they await the lowest remaining seed out of their division. Game dates and times have not been announced yet.
