Achieving two back-to-back victories in their last games, Team Germany has finally found their stride after a rocky start to the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship. The team saw their first success with a 6-2 win against Hungary, which was then followed by a victory against Austria with a triumphant repeat score. This has boosted Germany to fourth in the Group A standings.
Promoted to a coveted role on the first line, Lukas Reichel scored a goal for the team when taking on Hungary. Linemates Frederik Tiffels and Joshua Samanski set up the puck for the Nürnberg native, who swiftly sent it to the back of the net in the second period. This was just one of Team Germany’s many goals that helped swing their momentum and boost their confidence, having not had a win up until this matchup.
This proved to be a warm-up for the 24-year-old as he went on to secure a hat trick in the next battle against Austria, leading the charge for the team. The game’s first period passed by quietly, but the left-winger was quick to balance the score after Leon Wallner took the early advantage. This marked the first goal for Germany in the game and set the tone with another strike following ten minutes later.
Reichel scored twice again in the third period, finding the net at 45:47 and 51:45 in the game. The matchup ended with the Nürnberg talent taking home an impressive four points, earning another with an assist on a goal by Samanski. The fellow German forward – who made his debut with the Edmonton Oilers this season – also had a stellar night with an additional two points achieved. Both were accomplished, supporting Reichel’s hat-trick performance.
Samanski shared his excitement, saying, “Obviously an amazing feat to score a hat trick at the Worlds! I’m just really happy for him [Reichel], seeing him put three in the back of the net, and happy that I could be part of it.”
The standout night saw the left-winger tally up his World Championship scoresheet to seven points in total (4G, 3A) and continue his offensive surge for his national team. The 2026 World Championship marks Reichel’s fifth time representing Team Germany, further highlighting his experience on the international stage. Most recently, he took part in the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, where he posted three points (2G, 1A) across five games.
The Boston Bruins snapped up Reichel after seeing his performance on Olympic ice, taking note of his agility and speed in particular. Since then, the 6’0”, 170-pound forward has danced between playing in the National Hockey League and the American Hockey League. He has demonstrated potential at both levels and looks to be a regular call-up moving forward. More recently, he reaffirmed his commitment to the Bruins, having signed a one-year contract extension.
Reichel will be looking to bring more of this production to Boston and prove himself to be a reliable presence. With evident pace and skill, he is now looking for greater time on ice in the National Hockey League, which will allow him to play a bigger role and drive a stronger impact during the game. The World Championship will be an opportunity for Reichel to continue his development and contribute in key moments, proving he has just what it takes to secure a full-time role with the Bruins.
