The Boston Bruins have announced today, September 16th, that they’ve signed forward Matt Poitras to a one-year, two-way contract extension with an National Hockey League cap hit of $850,000. The contract comes on the first day of the Bruins’ 2026-27 training camp and preseason.
Poitras, 22, is coming off of his three-year, entry-level contract that was signed ahead of the 2023-24 season, where he made his National Hockey League debut. In that season, he played a total of 33 games before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury. Through those 33 games, he’d record 5-10-15 and a plus/minus of +4.
Going into the 2024-25 season, Poitras would once again make the big club out of training camp, and would again appear in 33 games, but this time, he was playing between the NHL and the American Hockey League Providence Bruins. Boston was struggling, and it was conducive to Poitras’ development, so he’d go back and forth between the two teams.
In Boston, he definitely didn’t have a strong a season as his rookie year. In 33 games, he’d record 1-10-11 and a plus/minus of -5. In Providence, he’d play 40 games and record 17-24-41 with a plus/minus of +4. He’d also appear in the Calder Cup playoffs with Providence, recording 2-2-4 through eight games played.
He’d begin the 2025-26 season in Providence, where he’d eventually end up playing 69 games on the season. He recorded 13-33-44 through those 69 games. During the season, he was called up to Boston just one time where he appeared in three games and recorded 1-0-1. After finishing out the season with Providence, and appearing in four Calder Cup playoff games — recording 1-3-4 — his contract expired and he became a restricted free agent.
