On October 27, 2022, the Boston Bruins and Vancouver Canucks executed what was widely regarded as a “minor” trade. In this deal, the Bruins sent former first-round pick Jack Studnicka to the Canucks in exchange for goaltender Michael DiPietro and prospect Jonathan Myrenberg. Although Myrenberg has yet to play in North America, the trade turned out to be a significant win for the Bruins due to Michael DiPietro’s performance.
The former Canadian World Junior starter worked his way up the ranks, beginning his tenure as a Bruins with their East Coast Hockey League affiliate, the Maine Mariners. Just two years later, he has become the most dominant goalie in the American Hockey League.
After being traded, DiPietro was assigned to the ECHL Affiliate, the Maine Mariners, where he performed exceptionally well. In 29 games as a starter, he achieved a Goals Against Average (GAA) of 2.61 and a Save Percentage (SV%) of .918. The Windsor, Ontario native also had one appearance with the AHL affiliate, the Providence Bruins, where he recorded a GAA of 2.00 and an impressive SV% of .943. During his time with Maine, he finished with 19 wins and nine losses, demonstrating that he was ready for the next stage in his development.

DiPietro began the 2023-24 season as the backup for the Providence Bruins. Throughout the season, he demonstrated his leadership abilities by outperforming his tandem partner, Brandon Bussi, with impressive statistics. The Windsor Spitfires product achieved a goals-against average (GAA) of 2.51 and a save percentage (SV%) of .918, compiling an 18-9-2 record over 30 starts with the team. It is essential to have two exceptional goalies in the AHL to contend for a Calder Cup, and P-Bruins fans were optimistic that they had found that duo, setting up an exciting 2024-25 season.
Once again, DiPietro began the season as a backup, with Brandon Bussi starting against the Laval Rocket on opening night. Since then, the former Ottawa 67er has excelled, leading nearly every significant goaltending statistic. So far this season, Michael has posted an impressive 2.05 goals against average and a .928 save percentage.
In his 32 starts, the 6-foot-1 netminder has achieved a record of 20 wins, seven losses, and four overtime losses, making him one of only two goalies in the AHL to reach 20 wins this early in the season. This stellar performance earned him a spot on the AHL Atlantic Division All-Star team, where he won the CCM Top Goaltender Award. His consistency during what has been a turbulent season for the Providence Bruins has been nothing short of remarkable.
The 25-year-old’s incredible season has given the Bruins’ management some flexibility as they approach the trade deadline. The Boston Bruins’ backup goalie Joonas Korpisalo could be a significant trading asset for the team. Fans have been calling for DiPietro to get a chance at the next level, especially since his contract expires at the end of this season.
Additionally, many are drawing comparisons between the young netminder and Boston and Providence legend Tim Thomas, who recorded an unbelievable .941 save percentage during the 2003-04 season with the P-Bruins. DiPietro has received widespread acclaim, and fans eagerly look forward to the Calder Cup playoffs with him as the starting goalie.
