Acquired at the 2025 National Hockey League trade deadline, Casey Mittelstadt has been a fairly valuable piece for the Boston Bruins. Slotting in on the second line, and often the first powerplay unit, Mittelstadt was logging solid minutes since his arrival, averaging 17:17 per night, which is the second highest average of his career.

Through this offseason, and even going as far back as his acquisition, the feeling was that Mittelstadt wasn’t the Bruins main target in the trade that acquired him, and they were potentially looking to shop him.

Jimmy Murphy of the RG Media first reported that the Bruins were shopping the 26-year-old center. In his article, he reported that an NHL executive told him “I don’t know how many rumors he’s been in, but I’ve been hearing [Casey] Mittelstadt could be on the move again since before the Bruins season even ended.”

With the recent buzz surrounding his name, it’s worth taking a look: should the Bruins trade Casey Mittelstadt? The short answer? No.

Mittelstadt is still young, still just 26-years-old, and he’s on a relatively inexpensive deal. He’s heading into the second year of a three-year deal, making $5.75 million per year.

His best season offensively came in the 2022-23 season with the Buffalo Sabres. Through the full 82 game season, Mittelstadt posted 15-44-59. The next season his stats would stay pretty consistent, split between Buffalo and Colorado, as he was dealt at the 2024 trade deadline. Through 80 games that season, he’d record 18-39-57.

Mittelstadt had a bit of a drop off year in 2024-25, playing both in Colorado and Boston. Through a cumulative 81 games played in 2024-25, Mittelstadt would only record 15-25-40. If he can get back up to the 55-60 point per season production level, he’d be a more than reliable middle-six center.

With Elias Lindholm at first-line center, James Hagens likely on his way in at the end of the season or beginning of next season, Mittelstadt could get bumped down to third-line center, but his level of production at that role would provide great scoring depth to a team certainly lacking in that department.

While it would generally be unwise to trade Mittelstadt considering the lack of offensive generation from this roster, if the Bruins were to trade Mittelstadt, their best bet would be to wait until the 2026 trade deadline – similar to how they sent Charlie Coyle when originally acquiring Mittelstadt.

Coyle provided a great return to Boston, and Mittelstadt has the potential to do the same. While this is going to likely be a season where he struggles to produce offensively, giving Mittelstadt an entire season with Boston (at least up until March) could help with his lack of scoring. At the time of the trade deadline, Coyle only produced 15-7-22 through 64 games.

Whether or not there are plans from the front office to trade Mittelstadt, now isn’t the time. Teams are always more desperate as the trade deadline nears, and the price for players generally increases. If Mittelstadt were to get moved, the smart time to do so would be closer to the trade deadline to maximize the return.
