After a busy day of transactions that saw Boston recall forwards Riley Tufte and Matej Blumel from Providence, as well as place forwards Viktor Arvidsson and Casey Mittelstadt on Injured Reserve, as well as defenseman Jordan Harris on Long-Term Injured Reserve, General Manager Don Sweeney has made another move. The Bruins have placed 2019 First-Round pick Johnny Beecher on waivers for the purpose of assignment to the Providence Bruins. A native of Elmira, New York, Beecher had one goal in six games with Boston this season, with a -1 rating.
Whether or not Beecher will clear waivers remains to be seen. While the 24-year-old has struggled for playing time this season, he is a 6’3″, 220-pound center in a league filled with teams that are constantly looking for center depth. While his offensive game is pretty limited, he does hold his own defensively, can kill penalties, and has a career faceoff percentage of 53.1%. According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, teams may be interested. “Montreal is looking for a Center, and I don’t think I would be surprised if Vancouver checked in on him,” Friedman told Rick Dhaliwal.
Whether or not Beecher is claimed before two P.M. Eastern tomorrow afternoon, it has become clear that the Bruins’ center depth has made him no longer necessary in Boston. With the emergence of Fraser Minten, as well as the summer signings of Sean Kuraly and Michael Eyssimont, there just wasn’t room for Beecher in the B’s bottom-six any longer.
