Johnny Beecher’s time in Boston is officially over. The 2019 1st-round pick is headed to Western Canada, after being claimed off waivers this afternoon by the Calgary Flames. A native of Elmira, New York, Beecher had a goal in six games this season for the Bruins, with a -1 Plus/Minus rating.
The Bruins drafted Beecher 30th overall in 2019, out of the United States National Team Development Program. Beecher played three seasons at the University of Michigan before turning pro in 2022. He played in 136 NHL games during his time in Boston, as well as 87 American Hockey League games with Providence.
Beecher’s best moment in a Bruins sweater was when he opened the scoring in Game One of the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Of the 12 goals Beecher has scored in the NHL to date, it is certainly the most memorable. The Bruins would go on to win the Best-of-Seven series against Toronto in seven games, before falling to the Florida Panthers in six games in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
He will join a Calgary Flames team that is dead last in the National Hockey League, having picked up only 13 points in their first 20 games. Whether or not Beecher can cement a spot with the Flames remains to be seen.
