Earlier today, during a media scrum before the Bruins’ 10:00 p.m. matchup against the Anaheim Ducks, Bruins’ head coach Marco Sturm provided an injury update about Charlie McAvoy, who took a puck to the face in the Bruins’ visit to the Bell Center last Saturday night.

Sturm told reporters that “Charlie had facial surgery, successfully. He’s doing good. He’s recovering right now at home. We still don’t know how long he’s going to be out.”

There was no specification as to what the exact injury was, just that he had facial surgery.

While this news isn’t surprising, it’s certainly a blow to the Bruins’ blueline. McAvoy missed the remainder of last season following the Four Nations Face-Off due to a shoulder injury turned staph infection. When he entered the 2025 offseason, his main focus was a healthy start to the 2025-26 season.

In his 19 games to start the 2025-26 campaign, McAvoy has posted 0-14-14, and has been quarterbacking the first power play unit. It was a bit of an up and down start for McAvoy, but he was beginning to show glimpses of his offensive capabilities after being paired with Nikita Zadorov. The top pairing was proving to be extremely effective for the B’s, and this loss will require both Zadorov and Hampus Lindholm to play an elevated role.

Last year, the Bruins were substantially worse without Charlie McAvoy, posting a record of 10-17-5 (.391%) without him in the lineup, and a record of 23-22-5 (0.510%) when he was in the lineup. If the goal is to make the postseason, they’re going to need a fully healthy Charlie McAvoy in pretty short order, or we may see a grim repeat of the 2024-25 campaign.
