With less than an hour to go before the 2026 National Hockey League Entry Draft, news broke that the Boston Bruins were working to acquire Utah Mammoth right-winger J.J. Peterka, per insider Elliotte Friedman. It’s just the second trade made by general manager Don Sweeney since the offseason began.
Peterka, 24, was traded to Utah from Buffalo last June, where he would go on to play the full 82-game season in 2025-26, recording 25-22-47 through those 82 games. His career-best season came in 2024-25 in Buffalo, where he would record 27-41-68 through 77 games played.
The German-native right winger was also named to Team Germany’s 2026 Milano Cortina Olympic team. Peterka is signed through the 2029-30 season with an NHL cap hit of $7.7 million.
As of right now, there are no clear details in terms of a return. According to Frank Seravalli, one of the deals proposed by the Bruins included multiple first-round picks, and Boston certainly has plenty to spare. They have the 23rd overall pick in this year’s draft, two first-rounders in the 2027 draft, and two first-rounders in the 2028 draft.
