The Boston Bruins have officially announced a series of roster transactions as they prepare for the start of the 2026-27 National Hockey League regular season. These moves, revealed in the team’s press release, help the Bruins approach salary-cap compliance ahead of tomorrow evening’s 5 p.m. roster-submission deadline and shape both the NHL and AHL rosters for their respective upcoming campaigns.
- Forward Jake Schmaltz will report to the AHL Providence Bruins training camp after spending last season appearing in 64 games, posting 9 goals and 14 assists for 23 points in his first full professional season. Schmaltz, a 2019 seventh-round pick and former University of North Dakota standout, continues to develop his game in the Bruins organization.
- Forwards Riley Duran and Dans Locmelis have been assigned to Providence. Duran, a former Providence College forward, played all 72 games for Providence last season, tallying 7 goals and 12 assists for 19 points in his second full AHL season. Locmelis, who was limited by injury last year, made a strong impression this fall at NHL camp and is coming off a rookie pro campaign with 15 goals and 13 assists in 43 games after departing UMass at the end of the 2024-25 season.
- Defenseman Henri Jokiharju has been placed on waivers for the purpose of assignment to Providence. Jokiharju, who suited up for 41 games with Boston last year and notched 2 goals and 13 assists, could return to the AHL for the first time in nearly eight years if he clears waivers.
- Forward Matt Poitras has been placed on injured reserve, retroactive to September 22, 2026, after an impressive training camp with Boston. Last season, Poitras was a key contributor for Providence, recording 13 goals and 31 assists for 44 points in 69 games. At the NHL level, he has posted 7 goals and 20 assists in 69 games. Poitras also inked a one-year, two-way contract extension this offseason, signaling Boston’s ongoing commitment to his development.
The Providence Bruins, now led by new head coach Trent Whitfield, will begin their 2026-27 AHL regular season with a home opener on Friday, October 2nd at the Amica Mutual Pavilion in downtown Providence, Rhode Island. They will face the visiting Utica Comets in what promises to be an exciting start to the Whitfield era. With the recent roster moves, Providence’s lineup will feature a mix of returning contributors and rising prospects eager to make an impact and push for NHL opportunities throughout the season.
