The Boston Bruins played their final preseason game against the Washington Capitals this past Friday. During the contest, Morgan Geekie corralled a loose puck in front of the crease and batted home the tally for his second goal of the preseason.
The Bruins are slated to begin the 2026-2027 season Tuesday, September 29th against the New York Rangers at TD Garden. And Geekie is primed to be another key cog in Boston’s offensive attack.
The 28-year-old winger has exploded in productivity over the past two seasons. Geekie first got rolling during the 2025 season, potting a career-high 33 lamp lighters.
Heading into last season, one of the big questions coming out of Bruins training camp was whether Geekie could duplicate those numbers or if that season was more of an anomaly. Geekie silenced the doubters by performing even better.
He ended the campaign with career-highs in goals, 39, and points, 68. In each of his three seasons so far in Boston, he has set career bests in both categories.
This season, Geekie could become even more of an elite offensive player. In the Bruins’ 5-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers earlier in the preseason, he saw time at the bumper position during the power play. Geekie tipped home a tally from the high slot on the man advantage for one of Boston’s scores.
“I think Morgan is a guy (that) probably needs to feel even more comfortable in the middle,” Bruins Head Coach Marco Sturm told the media following Boston’s victory. “He’s so used to being the shooter on the flank. But, you know, these guys can exchange too. So, it’s just hopefully the start of something good, because we are having really good players on that unit. And hopefully they can be the same weapon they were last year.”
Moving Geekie to the bumper position, either consistently or every so often, would add a new wrinkle to Boston’s man advantage. Geekie’s ability to rifle home one-timers without needing much time or space is one of the best qualities of his offensive game. The Bruins’ first power play unit would benefit from exploring this new look.
Geekie has proven to be a legit offensive weapon in Boston. His heavy slap shot, quick wrister, and knack for finding open ice to exploit have helped him pot 30 goals in back-to-back NHL seasons. But there is one area he can improve in to reach the next level.
As prolific as Geekie has been these past two seasons, he has also proven to be quite streaky. Last season, he went through a 12-game and 17-game scoreless stretch.
There is no doubt he is a dynamic goal scorer with a heavy and accurate shot. But to reach the next level, he will have to cut back on such dramatic scoreless droughts. It is incredibly difficult to be a 40-goal scorer and be that dependent on hot streaks.
But as a durable player with two extra regular season games to work with, and with the chance to get looks in the slot on the power play, Geekie should be able to take the next step and become a 40-goal scorer in Boston. He has the ability and work ethic to get there and came painfully close last season. Now, it is up to Geekie to prove he can reach that plateau with his play on the ice this year.
