Although it is not technically Deadline Day around the National Hockey League, the Boston Bruins are starting their shopping early. The Bruins and general manager Don Sweeney announced Sunday night that they have acquired defenseman Mike Reilly from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for a 2022 third round draft pick.
Reilly has a career-high 19 points, all assists, to go along with a minus-two rating and 18 penalty minutes in 40 games for the Sens this season. The 6-foot-1, 199-pound defenseman is in the final season of a two-year contract worth a cap hit of $1.5 million.
The Chicago, Illinois, native has suited up in 244 career NHL games with the Senators, the Montreal Canadiens and the Minnesota Wild. In total, the left-shot blueliner has eight goals and 64 assists for 72 points. In 103 American Hockey League games with the Iowa Wild, Reilly has 11-43-54 totals.
Originally drafted in the fourth round (98th overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets, the 27-year-old spent three years at the University of Minnesota before turning pro, totaling 18 goals and 71 assists for 89 points in 117 collegiate contests. As a junior in 2014-15, Reilly put up 6-36-42 numbers en route to earning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year honors for the second straight year in addition to being named a Hobey Baker finalist.
The Bruins, decimated by injuries, especially on the blueline, lost 8-1 to the Washington Capitals on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Trade Deadline is Monday, April 12 (tomorrow), at 3 p.m ET.
