The Boston Bruins announced Saturday morning that defenseman Brandon Carlo is week-to-week with an upper body injury. Carlo exited Boston’s game against Pittsburgh on Thursday during the first period after sustaining the injury. Boston lost, 4-1.
“It’s been a trying year for him, Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy said of Carlo’s injury to reporters this morning, according to Evan Marinofsky of CLNS Media.
Cassidy had already ruled Carlo out of Saturday’s game on Friday prior to this morning’s announcement. The Bruins did not provide any further details on Carlo’s injury.
The 24-year-old had just returned to the lineup on Tuesday after missing ten games due to a concussion he suffered after taking a high hit from Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson on March 5. The NHL suspended Wilson for seven games. It was the second documented brain injury of Carlo’s young career.
Carlo did not skate on Friday during the team’s practice at Warrior Ice Arena in Brighton, Mass. This season, the 6-foot-5, 227-pound blueliner has two goals and an assist in 23 games this season in addition to 10 penalty minutes and a plus-one rating.
On his career, Boston’s second round pick (37th overall) from the 2015 NHL Entry Draft has skated in 320 regular season games, notching 54 points (14g, 40a), a plus-58 rating and 194 penalty minutes. In 37 playoff contests with the Bruins, Carlo has 2-3-5 totals, a plus-10 rating and 14 penalty minutes.
The Bruins are set to square off with the Penguins for the second game in a row on Saturday at TD Garden, having lost two of their last three games. Puck drop is set for 1 p.m.
