Terrible penalty kills, questionable officiating, and unlucky movements in the net were the theme for the Bruins as they drop Game Five to the Islanders. As frustrations grow amongst the players and coaching staff, Boston is now facing elimination as the series shifts back to New York.

GAME BREAKDOWN

Big hits and some early shots from the Boston Bruins opened up the first period. In a pivotal Game Five, the Bruins wasted no time playing aggressively towards the Islanders’ net. Quick movement paid off for the Bruins as David Pastrnak slapped one in past Semyon Varlamov, giving Boston an early lead. Charlie McAvoy and Brad Marchand were credited with the assists.

The Bruins were buzzing around the net as Marchand was thisclose to giving Boston another goal. Compared to Game Four, the B’s had more zone time in the Islanders’ end as they continued to dominate gameplay. Little scrums broke out after most shot attempts as both teams were itching to score. The Islanders would draw the first power play of the night as Sean Kuraly was called for slashing against Noah Dobson. Unfortunately, Matt Barzal would tie the game as the puck bounced past Tuukka Rask.

SCORE END OF FIRST: BOS-1, NYI-1

SHOTS ON GOAL: BOS-11, NYI-7

Three minutes into the second period Matt Grzelcyk would get called for cross-checking against Leo Komarov. Kyle Palmieri would score on the man advantage, giving the Islanders a 2-1 lead. The lead was short-lived as Brad Marchand slipped the puck past Varlamov, tying the game 2-2.

The Bruins did not let up on the pressure as they peppered Varlamov with pucks. Unfortunately, Josh Bailey beat Rask to the puck giving the Islanders a 3-2 lead. Chris Wagner was sent to the penalty box for hi-sticking against Mathew Barzal. Once again the Islanders scored on the man advantage giving them a 4-2 lead. Unbelievably the Bruins would be on the man-advantage as Jordan Eberle was called for slashing against Connor Clifton. The period would end with the Bruins still on the power play.

SCORE END OF SECOND: BOS-2, NYI-4

SHOTS ON GOAL: BOS-15, NYI-9

It was announced by the Bruins that Curtis Lazar suffered a lower-body injury and would not return to the game. Jeremy Swayman would make his playoff debut as he took over netminder duties. Brock Nelson would score making it 5-2. The Islanders’ Adam Pelech was called for a hooking penalty against Pastrnak, who then scored within seconds, making it 5-3.

The Islanders were once again on the power play after Patrice Bergeron was called for a delay of game (puck over the glass). Luckily Boston killed the penalty for the first time tonight. After a push towards the net and with five minutes left to the period, David Krejci would bring the Bruins within one goal of tying the game.

With an empty net and six men on the ice the Boston Bruins would make one final push but were unable to score as the Islanders win 5-4.

SCORE END OF GAME: BOS-4, NYI-5

TOTAL SHOTS ON GOAL: BOS-44, NYI-19

NEXT GAME: Wednesday, June 7th, with puck drop at 7:30 PM, at Nassau Veteran Memorial Coliseum.
