This morning, General Manager Don Sweeney announced that the Bruins signed NCAA defenseman Michael Callahan to a two-year $883,750 entry-level contract. Callahan’s entry-level contract goes into effect next season. He potentially can join the Providence Bruins on an Amateur tryout for the remainder of the 2022 AHL season. Boston acquired the defenseman’s rights in a trade for the Bruins’ seventh-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft with the Arizona Coyotes in late February.

The Arizona Coyotes drafted the former Providence College Friar in the fifth round of the 2018 NHL Draft. Callahan recently finished his senior season with the Friars as they were eliminated in the Hockey East quarterfinals by UMass Amherst on Saturday. Callahan collected three goals and 11 assists in 38 games this season and served as a captain for the third consecutive year for the Friars.

The Franklin, Massachusetts native scored 13 goals and 53 assists in 136 games for the Friars. Before playing for Providence College as a freshman, the 22-year-old played in the USHL for the Bloomington Thunder and the Central Illinois Flying Aces, where he earned a spot on the USHL All-Rookie Team in the 2017-18 season.

Standing at 6-foot-2 196-pounds, Callahan is a talented two-way defenseman who played in all situations for Providence College head coach Nate Leeman. Callahan is a good puck distributor and often played on the first powerplay unit for the Friars. While he is known more for being reliable defensively, offense comes second nature to him with his quick release and deception.

Despite Callahan not making the quick jump to the NHL, it’s good to see Boston’s management is looking to develop talent by adding him to their prospect pool.
