The Boston Bruins have acquired left winger Tyler Bertuzzi from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for a 2024 1st-round pick (top-ten protected) and a 2025 4th-round pick. The Red Wings will also retain 50 percent of Bertuzzi’s salary in the trade.

Wow, Don Sweeney is not messing around this year. Sweeney already made a massive move picking up Dmitry Orlov and Garnet Hathaway in late February, and now adds Bertuzzi to an already lethal top-nine forward group for the Bruins.

Bertuzzi, a 28-year-old forward, is in the final season of a two-year contract he signed with the Red Wings on July 31, 2021, and can become an unrestricted free agent after the season. He has 14 points (four goals, ten assists) in 29 games this season and has missed time because of hand injuries.

Bertuzzi was a second-round draft choice by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2013 draft. The 6’1, 180-pound winger has played in 305 games in his NHL career while registering 202 career points in those games. Bertuzzi is a two-time 20+ goal scorer and scored a career-high 30 goals in 68 games last season with the Red Wings.

This trade gives the Bruins more depth in the forward group, especially after Taylor Hall and Nick Foligno suffered injuries. Since another player was not included in the deal for Bertuzzi, Hall will be going on LTIR (long-term injury reserve), which saves the Bruins 6 million in LTIR cap space.
