The American Hockey League Providence Bruins announced today that the top minor-pro affiliate of the National Hockey League Boston Bruins, have agreed to terms with free agent defenseman Colin Felix. The 26-year-old New Jersey native is 6’1″ 203-pounds and is a right shooting blueliner that Providence hockey writer Mark Divver says he’s a rugged defenseman and miserable to play against.

The undrafted blueliner has familiar ties to the state of Rhode Island as he attended prep school at St. George’s in Middletown and also spent some time playering for the Rhode Island Saints (U16 AAA) according to Elite Prospects. Felix attended the University of Massachusetts posting 4-38-42 numbers in 140 NCAA games played in the heavy Hockey East Conference earning a National Championship with his Minutemen in 2021. Colin was named assistant captain in his senior season (2021-22) before signing pro in the AHL.

After leaving UMass for the professional ranks, Felix signed an AHL deal with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms playing in one game after his NCAA year ended. The following season (2022-23) Colin would appear in 72 games for the ECHL Reading Royals who are the feeder team to the higher Lehigh Valley club where he posted 8-19-27 numbers.

In 2023-24, the rugged blueliner signed an AHL contract starting with the Utica Comets at the beginning of the season and later join the Comets ECHL affiliate the Adirondack Thunder. With the Thunder he contributed 5-13-18 numbers in 41 games. Last season (2024-25) Felix played with the Chicago Black Hawks AHL affiliate posting 1-4-5 numbers in 36 games.

This move is seemingly going to be one that bolsters the Providecne backend but also brings that heavy gritty factor and a menace to anyone who comes near the AHL Bruins crease. If things don’t work out in Providecne for Felix and needs constant playing time, he could be a valued asset to the NHL Bruins ECHL minor-pro affiliate in Portland, Maine with the Maine Mariners. Nothing wrong with adding depth to an organization no matter what level a player is added to.
