Over this playoff series against the Buffalo Sabres, the Boston Bruins have revealed a lot about themselves. The bigger realization about the general roster is a negative one, but with the series still ongoing, there is reason for some belief from the fans in the direction of the team as well.

At the very least, people see the resilience of the team game-to-game under the leadership of head coach Marco Sturm. However, for the core of players like Charlie McAvoy and David Pastrnak, there will be homework in the offseason that could stack up to be ultimately too heavy.

Bruins Stalwarts Spark Inherent Panic

Although it’s never purposeful from these players, there seem to be documented situations of indecisiveness in bigger moments that are hard to ignore. It plays itself out numbers-wise with the inconsistent output of the power play unit over the years and the lack of a push-through regarding expected playoff success.

You can’t find these talents just anywhere, though, as McAvoy’s ability to eat minutes and play on both sides of the ice, while Pastrnak produces gaudy numbers, is a big part of why the franchise has never had to rebuild instead of retool. But is a tight set of hands on the stick in crucial situations from these players, including one with a long-term commitment like Hampus Lindholm, worth going forward with if the recent seasonal finalities are all you get?

General manager Don Sweeney is surely mulling these sorts of intricacies as he observes the conclusion of this first round. He’ll be put in an undeniably tough situation if this season concludes for the Bruins before a conference final appearance, for example.

He’s seen the inferiorly skilled 2022–2023 Bruins get out-grinded by the Florida Panthers, pivoted back to a heavier roster, and still found no dice. He’s on track to bite the bullet on what has been in the back of his mind and square in on the tenured presence.

I think that the Bruins are one or two (good) players away from being a true contender. One good defenseman and one good scoring wing.
