Boston Bruins assistant coach Jay Leach has surfaced as a prominent name in the ongoing search for head coaches in both the American Hockey League and the National Hockey League. According to recent reports from reputable NHL insiders Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet and Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, two professional hockey organizations have emerged as leaders in the availability of head coaching jobs.

On the May 29th episode of the popular “32 Thoughts” podcast, Friedman stated, “I think some AHL jobs are close to getting filled. Hartford has an opening, and Jay Leach, the assistant in Boston, I’m told, has an excellent shot at that job.” The Hartford Wolf Pack, the AHL affiliate of the New York Rangers, is currently in the market for a new head coach, and Leach’s extensive coaching resume and reputation for player development make him a strong contender.

Meanwhile, Dave Pagnotta reported in The Fourth Period that Leach is also being considered for the head coaching position with the Belleville Senators, the AHL affiliate of the Ottawa Senators. Pagnotta wrote, “There are some who believe Jay Leach is in the running for the head coach job with the AHL Belleville Senators.”

Leach’s coaching background is notable. The Syracuse, New York native spent several years with the Boston Bruins top minor-pro affiliate, the Providence Bruins, starting off as an assistant for one year and later promoted to the AHL B’s head coach. Prior to returning to the Bruins as an assistant, he served as an assistant of the NHL’s Seattle Kraken for three seasons. His experience developing young talent and his familiarity with both the AHL and NHL environments make him an attractive option for organizations looking to nurture their prospects and build a winning culture.

As the AHL head coaching carousel continues to spin, all eyes will be on Leach’s next move. Whether he lands with the Hartford Wolf Pack, the Belleville Senators, or another organization, it’s clear that Jay Leach is a sought-after coaching candidate this offseason. It’s going to be interesting to see who the Bruins bring in to replace Leach as the organization continues to search the league looking for a defensive-minded assistant that will work well with Head Coach Marco Sturm’s system and defensive structure.
