As the Providence Bruins prepare for the opening game of the second round in the 2026 Calder Cup Playoffs, head coach Ryan Mougenel addressed the media at the Amica Mutual Pavilion in downtown Providence, Rhode Island. The fifth-year B’s coach shared candid thoughts on his team’s upcoming matchup against the Springfield Thunderbirds and the impact of a lengthy layoff from a lengthy playoff bye week.

Providence enters the best-of-five series well-rested after a 12-day bye, but Mougenel was quick to acknowledge the challenge that lies ahead. “Well, I think the biggest thing we can take out of it is that, you know, they’ve had a lot of success against us, um, especially later on in the season,” Mougenel said of Springfield. “They’ve really built a great identity and, you know, since the coaching change, you know, I think, uh, you know, Steve Ott’s done an amazing job of, of playing a certain way that’s been, uh, real tough to play against. It’s been evident. It’s been obvious. We know what we gotta do. I’m sure they know what they have to do, but, uh, they’re a real tough team, and I think Charlotte probably felt it. Um, you know, uh, short series, you know, we just gotta make sure we’re ready to go.”

Springfield, riding a wave of momentum after their 2-1 best-of-three first-round series win over Charlotte, presents a significant test for Providence. Mougenel’s respect for the Thunderbirds’ transformation under head coach Steve Ott was clear, as he noted the team’s “great identity” and physical style of play that has made them “real tough to play against.”

Addressing the unusual 12-day gap between playoff rounds, Mougenel highlighted the importance of leadership and preparation within the Bruins’ locker room. “Well, I think it starts with our leadership group. They’re competitive people in practice, and, you know, I’ve said it from day one, I think that’s, that’s really been a real staple for us is how we practice, how it translates to games,” he explained. “We rely a lot on our older guys to, you know, lead the way on and off the ice. And, uh, you know, the layoff is what you make of it. Um, I think it’s been super beneficial for us to, you know, reset a little bit, get the right frame of mind, and, and understand what we gotta do to, to have success.”

The 2025-26 regular season series between Providence and Springfield was marked by competitiveness and consistently close contests. Meeting twelve times over the course of the campaign, the Bruins edged out Springfield by winning seven games to the Thunderbirds’ five, but the narrow margin in both wins and total goals underscored just how evenly matched these two teams were.

Throughout the series, neither side was able to establish prolonged dominance. The Bruins ultimately outscored Springfield 35 to 29, a difference of just six goals across the entire twelve-game slate. That slight edge equates to an average margin of only half a goal per game, reflecting how frequently each game hung in the balance until the final moments. Many of the matchups were decided by a single goal, and both teams demonstrated resilience in bouncing back after losses, preventing either club from going on a lengthy winning streak against the other.

For Providence, the ability to eke out close victories made the difference in the regular season, but this is the postseason, and a totally different story. Their seven wins often came down to late-game execution, clutch goaltending, and timely scoring, while Springfield kept the pressure on with strong defensive efforts and opportunistic offense of their own. The Thunderbirds’ five wins were hard-fought, and their ability to keep the goal differential close shows they were rarely out of contention, even in defeat.

Overall, the 2025-26 season series between Providence and Springfield stood out as a testament to the parity and intensity of AHL hockey. The Bruins’ slight edge in both the win column and in total goals captured just how slim the difference was between these two rivals, promising more exciting and tightly contested battles in this upcoming best-of-five second-round series.
