At the 2018 National Hockey League Draft, defenseman Michael Callahan was selected with the 142nd overall pick by the Arizona Coyotes. Callahan’s stint with the Coyotes wouldn’t last long after being drafted. In February 2022, Callahan was traded to the Boston Bruins in exchange for a 2024 seventh-round draft pick. Callahan spent the majority of his time in the Bruins organization in the American League with the Providence Bruins after being traded by the Coyotes. Four years after being traded, it now appears Callahan’s time with the Bruins organization may be coming to an end.

Earlier this morning, New England Hockey Journal writer Mark Divver tweeted that Callahan is headed to free agency on July 1 at age 26. Providence has had a busy offseason, with goaltender Simon Zajicek signing a one-year contract extension, forward Georgii Merkulov having his rights traded to the KHL, and captain Patrick Brown signing overseas in Germany. Now, Providence gets news on one of its defensemen on the roster.

Callahan played only 22 NHL games with the Bruins, recording just one goal with a -6 rating. Callahan’s lone NHL goal was scored in April 2025 against the New Jersey Devils. Callahan played in 17 NHL games during the 2024-25 season, and it appeared he was on his way to getting more NHL experience in Boston. However, Callahan played in five NHL games during the 2025-26 season, recording zero points with a -1 rating. Callahan played three games in October, and one game in November and December. In his last NHL game played on Dec. 2, 2025, against the Detroit Red Wings, Callahan got less than three minutes of ice time. Callahan’s path to playing in the NHL was difficult, given Boston’s defensemen and his difficulty adapting to NHL speed.

This season with Providence, Callahan has the best AHL season of his career. Callahan recorded 16 points in 56 games, including a career-high 16 assists. Callahan’s +30 rating was the second-highest among Providence’s roster, and it led all defensemen on the roster. Callahan became an excellent shutdown defenseman who could play physical, clear pucks out, block shots, and play the penalty kill, and was an alternate captain over the past three seasons in Providence.

Despite regular-season success, Callahan struggled in the AHL Playoffs. In 20 career AHL Playoff games, Callahan recorded five assists with a -2 rating. Callahan underperformed for Providence when needed most. In Providence’s recent historic series loss to the Springfield Thunderbirds in the 2026 Atlantic Division Semifinals, Callahan recorded one assist with a -2 rating for the entire series. Callahan was on the ice when Springfield forward Zach Dean scored the overtime winner in Game 3 of the series and when forward Dillon Dube scored the series-winning goal in overtime in Game 4.

In the end, Callahan recorded 52 points with a +13 rating in 241 games in his four-year stint with Providence. Callahan became a respected leader in the Providence locker room with his presence. Callahan could still find his way to a team this offseason with his defensive style of play and strong presence on the ice.
