The Boston Bruins have seen players who played for them in the American League for the Providence Bruins leave this offseason. Captain Patrick Brown and Fabian Lysell were each lost in June. Last week, reports that defenseman Michael Callahan would test free agency hit the airwaves, and now, those reports have hit the Bruins. Today, Callahan signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
In 2022, the Bruins acquired Callahan from the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for a 2024 seventh-round draft pick. Callahan never got much playing time in the National Hockey League following the trade and was a mainstay with Providence. While Callahan recorded 52 points in 241 AHL games, he recorded just one goal in 22 NHL games.
Callahan had a good 2025-26 season in the AHL, where he recorded 16 points and a career-high of 14 assists in 56 games played. Callahan’s +30 rating was the second-highest on Providence’s roster, and it led all defensemen on the roster. However, Callahan played just five NHL games for Boston this past season.
Callahan played three games for Boston in October, then played in one game in November and December. Callahan’s last NHL game, on Dec. 2, 2025, against the Detroit Red Wings, saw him play less than three minutes. Providence is losing a big defenseman who can block shots, clear pucks out, play physically, and play on the penalty kill. Callahan also served as an alternate captain for the past three seasons with Providence.
