There’s another new captain in the Boston Bruins’ organization. Billy Sweezey has been named the 28th captain of the Providence Bruins, the B’s American Hockey League affiliate. Providence was looking for a new captain after veteran forward Patrick Brown departed the organization for Adler Mannheim in the DEL, and now Sweezey will get the opportunity to wear the C for the P-Bruins.
Sweezey, a native of Hanson, Massachusetts, is entering his third season in the Bruins’ organization and posted a goal and 16 assists, with 84 penalty minutes and a +21 rating in 69 games with Providence last season. Prior to joining the Bruins, he played three seasons in the Columbus Blue Jackets organization, where he played nine National Hockey League games with Columbus during the 2022-23 season, where he had an assist and also fought former Bruins forward Jakub Lauko. Prior to turning pro, Sweezey played four seasons of College Hockey with the Yale Bulldogs.
The P-Bruins’ regular season gets underway tomorrow night against the Utica Comets at the Amica Mutual Pavilion. It will be Sweezey’s debut as captain, as well as new Head Coach Trent Whitfield’s head-coaching debut. With a new Coach, a new Captain, and several other new faces in the organization, this P-Bruins team should look different than last year’s.
