The Providence Bruins suffered their second consecutive defeat to open the 2026-27 American Hockey League season, falling 2-0 to the visiting Springfield Thunderbirds on Sunday afternoon at the Amica Mutual Pavilion in downtown Providence, Rhode Island. This marks back-to-back home losses for Providence to begin the campaign, with the Bruins managing just one goal through six periods of play over the opening weekend.
After a sluggish start in Friday’s loss to the Utica Comets, Providence showed more jump in this afternoon’s contest. The first period was a physical, tightly contested affair, with both teams going scoreless. The Bruins held a slight edge in shots, outshooting Springfield 5-3, and it quickly became clear that these Atlantic Division rivals have little love for each other.
The deadlock was finally broken late in the second period. With 2:01 remaining, Springfield forward Justin Carbonneau—the St. Louis Blues’ 2025 first-round pick—capitalized on a Thunderbirds power play, netting his second goal of the young season. Aleksanteri Kaskimaki and T.J. Tynan set him up, giving Springfield a 1-0 lead. The Thunderbirds also took the lead in shots on goal in the middle frame, finishing with an 8-7 advantage.
Providence pressed in the third period, generating a 12-11 edge in shots, but could not solve Springfield goaltender Will Cranley. With time winding down and trailing by one, Bruins head coach Trent Whitfield pulled starting goaltender Simon Zajicek for an extra attacker, but the move was quickly punished. Springfield forward Otto Stenberg found the empty net, sealing the 2-0 victory for the Thunderbirds. Providence finished the game with a 24-22 advantage in shots on goal, but the effort was not enough to find the back of the net.
Simon Zajicek, making his first start of the season after Jiri Patera played Friday, performed admirably in net for Providence, stopping 20 of 21 shots. On the other end, Will Cranley was sharp throughout, turning aside all 24 Bruins attempts for his first career AHL shutout, as Springfield’s defense forced Providence’s shooters to the outside and limited quality chances all game.
After the loss, Head Coach Trent Whitfield expressed frustration but also determination to get the offense going. “Well, we gotta start to score,” Whitfield said. “With the talent that we have here to only score one goal in two games is not good enough. So we’re gonna have to get to work this week and start scoring some goals. We gotta start getting some guys on the inside. You know, we’re just being a little too cute, skating around the outside. It looks good, but we’re not really accomplishing a whole lot. We gotta get into the dirty areas, into the trenches a little bit. We just, we don’t have enough guys doing that right now.”
On the team’s offensive zone struggles, Whitfield added, “We’re not carrying the puck through the middle of the ice like we talk about. We’re getting that puck on wide ice early. It makes it easy for teams to end us off the rush. So that’s something we’re gonna have to address this week… We are one and done down there. Our first guy’s getting there; our second guy’s a little bit late all the time, so we gotta get closer together, a little bit better puck support, and then get to the net more. Too many shots getting to the net where there’s nobody there. It’s making it easy for the other team’s goalie.”
Whitfield praised Zajicek’s performance in net, stating, “I thought he played well. He made a huge save in the third to keep us in it, and he was steady in there. He did a great job, and kept us in it and gave us a chance.”
Looking ahead, Whitfield sees positives despite the early setbacks. “I thought we skated real well today. But again, we’re almost there. We’re almost to the front of the net to get those loose pucks. We’re almost coming up with second and third chances instead of coming up empty. So that’s something we gotta work on. We gotta get our timing down and get a little bit more cohesion with our lines. We don’t seem to have a lot of chemistry right now. So we gotta work on that and get some lines together that are gonna start to work and score some goals.”
The Providence Bruins will look to turn things around next weekend with a busy slate of three home games at the Amica Mutual Pavilion. They’ll face the Hartford Wolf Pack on Friday, October 9th, then the Charlotte Checkers on Saturday night, October 10th, and finish the weekend’s action Sunday afternoon against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The team will be eager to finally get a win this season and find their scoring touch as the new 2026-27 regular season continues.
