On Friday afternoon, the Boston Bruins announced that the club placed five players on waivers and assigned four to Providence Bruins training camp. Patrick Brown, Michael Callahan, Georgii Merkulov, Victor Soderstrom, and Riley Tufte are on waivers and will report to Providence camp upon clearing. Frederic Brunet, Riley Duran, Brett Harrison, and Fabian Lysell have been sent to Providence camp. These roster moves follow yesterday’s announcement that Billy Sweezey, Dans Locmelis, John Farinacci, and Dalton Bancroft were assigned to Providence.
The NHL club has been trimming its roster as the preseason and camp have gone along, and the team still has some decisions to make ahead of Wednesday night. Brown, Merkulov, Callahan, Soderstrom, and Tufte will have to clear waivers, giving the other 31 teams the chance to claim any of them. If they clear waivers, they will report to Providence camp. The results for waiver claims will come around 2:00 PM tomorrow, the same time that the Bruins drop the puck for their final preseason game against the Rangers. Lysell, Brunet, Duran, and Harrison have been assigned to the Providence Bruins and will not require waivers.
Patrick Brown led the Bruins with four preseason points in the three games he skated in, and the Providence captain wore the ‘A’ last night for Boston. Riley Tufte and Brett Harrison were the goal scorers on Thursday in the win against Washington. Harrison picked up two goals, making his name known during his first preseason game in the black and gold.
With the Bruins’ moves this summer, the team put itself in a position to have a very competitive training camp and preseason. These cuts were going to be tough for the players, especially. Per 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Ty Anderson, Marco Sturm said the players “were all disappointed, some more than others.” Players like Fabian Lysell and Georgii Merkulov have been in Providence working for a chance at the NHL. Over the summer, the Bruins brought in players like Matej Blumel and Alex Steeves to strengthen training camp competition.
After today’s roster moves, the Bruins’ training camp roster shapes up like this:
Forwards (17): Viktor Arvidsson, John Beecher, Matej Blumel, Michael Eyssimont, Morgan Geekie, Tanner Jeannot, Mark Kastelic, Marat Khusnutdinov, Sean Kuraly, Elias Lindholm, Fraser Minten, Casey Mittelstadt, David Pastrnak, Matt Poitras, Alex Steeves, Jeffrey Viel, Pavel Zacha
Defensemen (8): Jonathan Aspirot, Jordan Harris, Henri Jokiharju, Hampus Lindholm, Mason Lohrei, Charlie McAvoy, Andrew Peeke, Nikita Zadorov
Goaltenders (3): Michael DiPietro, Joonas Korpisalo, Jeremy Swayman
The Bruins will play in their sixth and final preseason game Saturday at 2:00 PM against the New York Rangers. The Bruins are expected to dress their full lineup, making the final preseason game critical for the black and gold and their new head coach. The regular season opens on Wednesday night in Washington.
