The Maine Mariners played their first-ever North Division Finals game in franchise history last night against the Wheeling Nailers, and it ended in heartbreak, losing 4-3 in overtime. Now, the pressure of trailing 1-0 on the road in a playoff series has intensified for the Mariners, with the next game being tonight.
The Mariners remain in West Virginia to take on the Nailers in Game 2 in the series, with puck drop scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET at WesBanco Arena.
Heading into Game 1 last night, the Mariners would have a tough battle facing Nailers goaltender Taylor Gauthier. Against the Reading Royals in the North Division Semifinals, Gauthier recorded three shutouts and lifted the Nailers to win the series in five games. Unlike the Royals, the Mariners found ways to score against Gauthier, but it wouldn’t matter in the end.
Mariners forward Antonio Venuto scored the game’s first goal at 7:20 into the game, but former Mariners and current Nailers forward Tristan Thompson tied the game at one. Scoring an early goal in the first period was crucial for the Mariners to get confidence against a hot goaltender in the playoffs. However, the Nailers scoring a goal after the Mariners took a lead would be common in the second period.
Thirty-seven seconds into the second period, Mariners defenseman Owen Gallatin scored to give the Mariners a 2-1 lead. The lead wouldn’t last long when Nailers forward Blake Bennett tied the game 2:58 later after Gallatin’s goal. The Mariners then got a 3-2 lead when forward Brooklyn Kalmikov scored his first goal of the 2026 playoffs with 4:46 remaining in the period. However, the Mariners couldn’t hold a lead for long. Nailers forward Mike Posma scored 47 seconds later after Kalmikov’s goal to tie the game at three.
The third period would be scoreless, and overtime was needed, but Mariners goaltender Brad Arvanitis made 18 saves in the period. Seven seconds into overtime, the Mariners got a power play opportunity when Nailers forward Brayden Edwards was called for a slashing penalty, but they wouldn’t score. Forward Ryan McAllister scored 3:10 into overtime to give the Nailers the Game 1 victory. The Nailers outshot the Mariners 42-30 in Game 1. Last night also marked the Mariners’ fourth one-goal loss in the 2026 playoffs.
Despite the loss last night, the Mariners showed they can be resilient after a playoff defeat, as they were against the Adirondack Thunder in the last round. The Mariners lost Game 2 at home to the Thunder, but then won the next two on the road. The Mariners showed resilience again, winning Game 7 to clinch the series after losing Games 5 and 6 in overtime.
Now, the Mariners must find a way to show resilience this time around after losing to the Nailers in Game 1. If the Mariners win Game 2, the series will be tied at one, and at least Game 5 will be needed. If the Nailers win, they take a 2-0 series lead when the series shifts for Game 3 on Monday night in Portland, Maine.
