The Professional Women’s Hockey League announced that Kris Sparre has been named Head Coach of PWHL Hamilton. He will be the franchise’s first coach. They were named as one of the four expansion teams on May 13th.

Sparre is leaving the Fleet better than he found them. The Coach of the Year finalist led Boston to a league-best 62 points. Their return to the playoffs was the quickest clinch in league history, despite their devastating exit.

Sparre is a native of nearby Mississauga, ON and his time in Hamilton will serve as a homecoming. He and his wife welcomed a second child in April of this year.

ā€œI’m excited for the opportunity to build a foundation in Hamilton alongside Meghan [Duggan], and moving closer to home and being near family makes this the right step for me personally and professionally,ā€ said Sparre in the press release.

Prior to his time with the Fleet, Sparre had never coached women’s hockey, nor had he ever held a head coach role in any league. His impact this past season was abundantly clear, with many players echoing just how successful he was as their leader.

While his reasons for taking the new role make sense, it still comes as a complete shock for many. Fleet General Manager Danielle Marmer released a statement saying, “While transitions are never easy, they also create the opportunity to grow and expand on what’s been built over the past three seasons…we are deeply committed to hiring a head coach who not only shares our values but will continue to elevate our team on and off the ice.

The new bench boss will stand as the third head coach in Boston’s franchise history, their third in just four seasons.
