Late Sunday night, the Boston Bruins announced that Morgan Geekie signed a six-year contract extension worth $33,000,000, with an average annual value (AAV) of $5.5 million. Geekie is coming off a career-best season, with 33 goals and 57 points, finishing second on the team in both categories.
Morgan Geekie will begin his third season with the organization when the Bruins take the ice in the fall. After scoring 17 goals in his first campaign, Geekie was off to a slow start to the 2024-25 season. The 26-year-old found his stride once Joe Sacco took over as the interim head coach, scoring 32 of his 33 goals this season after the coaching change. Four of Geekie’s goals came on the power play, and he found tremendous success while playing on the wing opposite David Pastrnak.
General Manager Don Sweeney is in the middle of an important summer for the franchise, and the Bruins are moving along their offseason checklist. Getting Geekie’s contract signed before July 1 disregards any chance of an offer sheet getting sent the Bruins’ way. According to PuckPedia, the Bruins will have $16,643,333 in salary cap space with the Geekie extension now signed. With the report that Jakub Lauko will be an unrestricted free agent, the lone remaining restricted free agent from last year’s roster is now just John Beecher.
Geekie expressed his desire to stay in Boston for “as long as he can,” so signing a contract with a six-year term fulfills his wish. He joined the organization on July 1, 2023, signing a 2-year deal totaling $4 million. His numbers have increased each year since joining the Bruins, going from a nine-goal season in his last year with Seattle to 17- and 33-goal campaigns while in Boston. Geekie also won NESN’s 7th Player of the Year Award in April, which is a fan-vote and is given to the team’s unsung hero.
Morgan Geekie, born in Strathclair, Manitoba, was a third-round draft pick (67th overall) by the Carolina Hurricanes in 2017. He debuted for the Hurricanes in the 2019-20 season and played 38 games for Carolina before being selected by the Seattle Kraken in the 2021 Expansion Draft. In two seasons with Seattle, Geekie scored 16 goals and added 34 assists. The Kraken did not qualify or extend Geekie’s contract at the end of the 2022-23 season.
