Team Sweden snapped a nearly fifteen-year-long Gold Medal drought last night at the World Junior Championship, defeating Team Czechia 4-2. While Vashek Blanar did not appear in a game, he was with the Czechs throughout the tournament.
James Hagens and Will Zellers did not reach the medal round, losing in overtime in the Quarterfinals to Team Finland. Both Hagens and Zellers were named to Team USA’s three best players of the tournament, along with Sabres prospect Brodie Ziemer. How did the rest of the Bruins’ prospect pool do this week?
Europe
Kirill Yemelyanov this week for Lokomotiv Yaroslavl (MHL): One game played, one goal, no penalties, +1 rating.
Juniors
Cole Chandler this week for the Shawinigan Cataractes (QMJHL): Four games played, one assist, two penalty minutes, +1 rating.
Cooper Simpson this week for the Youngstown Phantoms (USHL): Two games played, four goals, no penalties, +2 rating.
Simpson continues to light up the USHL, sitting second in league scoring with 43 points in 32 games. He is committed to the University of North Dakota for next season.
NCAA
Elliott Groenewold this week for Quinnipiac University (ECAC): Two games played, two assists, no penalties, +5 rating.
Kristian Kostadinski this week for Boston College (Hockey East): One game played, no points, no penalties, +1 rating.
Mason Langenbrunner this week for Harvard University (ECAC): Two games played, no points, no penalties, -2 rating.
Dean Letourneau this week for Boston College (Hockey East): One game played, one goal, two penalty minutes, Even Plus/Minus.
Letourneau has goals in each of his last five games and is far and away the most improved prospect in the Bruins’ system this season. He leads the Eagles in goals (11), and points (19), taking the lead over fellow B’s prospect James Hagens, while Hagens was away at the World Juniors.
William Moore this week for Boston College (Hockey East): One game played, one goal, no penalties, -1 rating.
Moore got his first goal in nine games against Lake Superior State, his third of the season. The Mississauga, Ontario, native got off to a hot start at BC, but cooled down a bit. He did register a goal and an assist in the Holiday Face-Off to begin the second half, hopefully a sign of things to come.
Casper Nassen this week for Miami (OH) University (NCHC): One game played, one assist, no penalties, Even Plus/Minus.
Chris Pelosi this week for Quinnipiac University (ECAC): Two games played, one goal, no penalties, Even Plus/Minus.
Pelosi returned from the Spengler Cup this weekend, burying a goal in a 9-1 rout of Harvard. He has 11-10-21 in 20 games for the Bobcats.
Philip Svedeback this week for Providence College (Hockey East): Two games played, 1-1-0 record, 2.00 goals against average, .907% save percentage.
Ryan Walsh this week for Cornell University (ECAC): Two games played, two assists, two penalty minutes, Even Plus/Minus.
Walsh scored a goal and added an assist against Swiss team HC Davos for the U.S. Collegiate Selects in their 6-3 loss in the Spengler Cup Championship game. He returned to Cornell this weekend and had two assists as the Big Red swept Nebraska-Omaha.
Will Zellers this week for the University of North Dakota (NCHC): One game played, one assist, no penalties, +2 rating.
After the US’s elimination against Finland, Zellers returned to UND’s lineup against Mercyhurst, registering an assist.
Providence and Maine
The Providence Bruins went 2-1-0 this week, with wins over the Hartford Wolf Pack and Springfield Thunderbirds. Frederic Brunet had the game-winning goal on Sunday against Springfield, scoring with a rocket from the point. Dans Locmelis had three goals this week, including two against Hartford on Friday. He was also named to the Latvian Olympic team early Tuesday morning.
Maine did not have as much luck as the P-Bruins, going 1-2-1 this week, with their only win coming on Sunday against the Trois-Rivieres Lions. Luke Cavallin stopped 22 of 24 shots for the Mariners, having been re-assigned to the ECHL from Providence.
