The Shining Star Showcase is a weekly series reviewing the Providence Bruins based on their performance after their most recent games. The Bruins have played seventeen games and are leading the division by sixteen points over Hartford in second place. They have extended their lead to seventeen points over Bridgeport in third place. The Bruins have an impressive 13-3-1 record. This netted them four points out of a possible six over that three-game span. We continue to see a platoon of goaltenders between the pipes, with Jeremy Swayman getting the call to Boston during this stretch. This continues to make room for three goaltenders between the pipes. We will look at the last trio of games, and here are the players that made the Shining Star Showcase this week (March 25 – April 5).
Shining Star: Jeremy Swayman
Jeremy Swayman has started nine games for the Bruins and sports a fantastic 8-1 record. Although his first loss came while in Marlboro, that did not stop the Boston Bruins from giving him a shot to play for the big club. He won his debut start, and that is a great accomplishment for a rookie to get to see Boston ice let alone win a debut on it. He continues to sit atop the list alone on the Shining Stars Showcase with a perfect seven for seven. Swayman is sporting for the AHL an awesome 1.89 goals-against-average as well as a .933 save percentage. Jeremy Swayman faced 30 shots and saved 28 in their win 3-2 win against Bridgeport. We wish him continued success in Boston during the goaltender situation with the big club. Another impressive week for what could be shaping up as MVP honors at the end of the season.
Shining Star: Matt Filipe
Welcome to the Shining Star Showcase, Matt Filipe! Filipe was able to light the lamp once and grab an assist on one of the three goals scored in their 3-2 win over Bridgeport. His effort and presence on the ice were noticed by many as he even was awarded one of the three stars for the night. He has been observing and learning from the veteran leadership and coaching staff kudos to everyone!. Matt, great job, and keep shining; we would love to see you back here on the showcase!
Shining Star: Alex Olivier Voyer
Bienvenu once again Alex Olivier Voyer to the Shining Star Showcase. This week your effort and contributions to the team go unnoticed again. In their 3-2 win over Bridgeport, Voyer contributed with a goal and an assist maintaining his presence on the ice with and without the puck. He was able to net his fourth goal this season. As the team continues to mix up combinations on offense, defense, and special teams, it is clear everyone is contributing on all levels. This week Voyer made a significant impact in their win.
Shining Star: Oskar Steen
Welcome back to the Shining Star Showcase, Oskar Steen! This week Steen was involved in both game-winning goals. His first contribution was the overtime winner in their 3-2 win against Bridgeport. At the halfway point of the overtime contest, Steen made it to the game’s endpoint and sending PBruins Nation home happy. The second contribution was assisting on the game-winning goal in their 2-1 win Monday over Bridgeport. Due to the Utica game being postponed, the Bruins played back-to-back tilts with the Sound Tigers. Steen continues to make his name known on the stat sheets and the Shining Star Showcase.
Shining Star: Kyle Keyser
The only thing better than one goaltender making the Shining Star Showcase is two goaltenders. The Showcase this week gets goaltender bookends with back-to-back wins shared with Kyle Keyser. Keyser made 26 saves on 27 shots sent his way in their 2-1 win versus Bridgeport Monday. When fellow netminder Jeremy Swayman got the call up to Boston, Keyser got the call to Marlboro, and he was stellar in his start between the pipes. When your goaltenders can come in and inspire the defense to play harder, which gives the offense an extra push, that is the recipe for winning. The Bruins continue to do just that.
