The Maine Mariners have added another important piece to their defensive corps, announcing that defenseman Owen Gallatin has re-signed with the club for the 2026-27 season. After arriving in Portland midway through last season, Gallatin quickly developed into a dependable presence on the blue line and now returns looking to build on a strong first impression.
Gallatin joined the Mariners in November after being acquired from the Fort Wayne Komets, bringing with him an impressive collegiate résumé from the University of Minnesota Duluth. Over four NCAA seasons, the Hugo, Minnesota native appeared in 152 games while totaling 79 points, showcasing the offensive instincts and poise that made him one of the Bulldogs’ most reliable defensemen.
It didn’t take long for Gallatin to carve out a role in Rick Kowalsky’s lineup. As the season progressed, his responsibilities continued to grow, earning more ice time in all situations, including opportunities on the power play. His ability to move the puck efficiently, make smart decisions under pressure, and contribute at both ends of the ice made him a valuable addition to a Mariners team that enjoyed the most successful season in franchise history.
Gallatin’s strong play was rewarded in January when he received his first American Hockey League opportunity, earning a loan to the Hartford Wolf Pack. While the call-up was brief, it served as another indication that his development was moving in the right direction and that his game was attracting attention beyond the ECHL.
After returning to Maine, Gallatin continued to be a steady contributor on the back end. His confidence with the puck and ability to transition the play fit perfectly into Kowalsky’s up-tempo system, while his calm presence helped stabilize the Mariners’ defensive group throughout the second half of the season.
Gallatin’s steady play was reflected in his production throughout the season. In 46 regular-season games with the Mariners, he recorded two goals and 15 assists for 17 points while continuing to grow into a reliable two-way defenseman. His offensive confidence carried over into the Kelly Cup Playoffs, where he elevated his game with two goals and five assists for seven points in 14 postseason contests.
Among Maine’s defensemen, Gallatin was one of the team’s top offensive contributors during the playoff run, highlighted by his memorable overtime game-winning goal during the Mariners’ franchise-record 10th consecutive victory late in the regular season. His ability to contribute in key moments while remaining dependable in his own zone made him one of Rick Kowalsky’s most trusted young blueliners heading into the offseason.
Gallatin’s return also strengthens what is shaping up to be an experienced defensive group. Alongside returning veterans such as Nick Anderson and Connor Doherty, he provides the Mariners with another reliable option capable of playing important minutes in every situation.
While Gallatin’s first season in Maine lasted only a few months, he showed enough to make it clear he can be an important part of the organization’s future. Now, with a full training camp and an entire season ahead of him, the talented defenseman will have an opportunity to take another step in his development and continue establishing himself as one of the Mariners’ key contributors on the blue line.
