One of the first moves Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney made to begin today was making a trade with the New York Rangers, in which he traded away goaltender Joonas Korpisalo in exchange for forward Kalle Vaisanen and a 2028 fourth-round draft pick. However, Sweeney wasn’t done with another trade with Rangers general manager Chris Drury, and the two made another deal.

The Bruins acquired defenseman Will Borgen in exchange for a 2027 second-round draft pick and a 2028 conditional third-round draft pick. It isn’t often that two teams make two trades involving each other in a day, but it happened with the Bruins and Rangers.

The Bruins needed a right-handed defenseman badly this offseason to play behind Charlie McAvoy, and Borgen is a player who can fit in well. At 29 years old, Borgen has recorded 83 points in 373 games in his National Hockey League career. While Borgen hasn’t been known for his offense, he makes up for it on defense.

Since the 2022-23 season, Borgen has recorded at least 80 hits and over 100 blocked shots in each season. Borgen recorded a career-high 203 hits for the Seattle Kraken in the 2022-23 season. This past season was a tough one for Borgen on a struggling Rangers team. Borgen recorded 15 points, 99 blocked shots, 111 hits, and a +3 rating in 75 games.

Borgen has now been traded for the second time in his career, following the Kappo Kakko trade in 2024. The Bruins will be Borgen’s fourth different NHL team. Borgen has an AAV of $4.1 million cap hit and will be an unrestricted free agent in 2030, which is the same year as defensemen Hampus Lindholm, Nikita Zadorov, and McAvoy’s contracts all run out.
